Who is Jaime Pressly?

Jaime Pressly, an American actress, model, and fashion designer, was born on July 30, 1977. She received nominations for a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award and is best known for playing Joy Turner on the NBC comedy My Name Is Earl, for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. She has acted in movies like Joe Dirt, Not Another Teen Movie, Jerry Springer’s Ringmaster, I Love You, Man, and A Haunted House 2. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the Critics’ Choice Television Awards for her role as Jill Kendall in the CBS comedy Mom.

Pressly was born in Kinston, North Carolina, the daughter of automobile salesman James Liston Pressly and dance instructor Brenda Sue. She relocated to Costa Mesa, California, with her family in 1992, where she spent the first semester of her sophomore year in high school.  She trained as a gymnast throughout her youth and early adolescence, which helped her land modelling gigs. She made her debut on the cover of Teen Magazine at the age of 14 and later served as the spokesperson for the International Cover Model Search.  She left school at the age of 15 and signed a modelling contract before travelling to Japan.

She was able to legally emancipate herself from her parents at the age of 15 in order to travel to Japan alone because neither of her parents could accompany her.  After making an uncredited appearance in the 1995 Baywatch movie and filming a cameo in the 1996 movie Mercenary, Pressly played as Violet, a spiteful seductress, in the third Poison Ivy movie and 1997 direct-to-DVD release Poison Ivy: The New Seduction. Following a brief cameo in the teen cult hit Can’t Hardly Wait, the actor made several guest appearances on television, including in the short-lived Push and Mortal Kombat: Conquest. She later went on to play one of the leads in the two-season The WB television series Jack & Jill, which ran from September 26, 1999, to April 15, 2001. Playing cunning gold-digger Sandy Lake in the independent 2000 film Poor White Trash, Pressly also starred in three teen-targeted 2001 theatrical movies.

Despite their different degrees of success, these roles helped Pressly gain wider recognition. She played Priscilla, a high school cheerleader, in the parody movie Not Another Teen Movie alongside Chris Evans, and she also portrayed a young wife in the sex comedy Tomcats and a Southern love interest in the comedy Joe Dirt with David Spade.  From 2005 through 2009, Pressly starred in the critically acclaimed NBC sitcom My Name Is Earl as Joy Turner, the cynical, heartless, obstinate, and egotistical ex-wife of a petty crook.

She received nominations for the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Award, and in 2007 she was recognised for her performance on the programme with a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.  In a past interview, Pressly referred to her part as her “biggest release” and thanked Greg Garcia for helping her regain her confidence in the industry. She stated: ” arrived just as I was beginning to wonder if this was the direction I wanted to go in. I had become weary of constantly moving about and living out of a bag. I yearned for some semblance of normalcy.”

Pressly produced the independent film Death to the Supermodels  during the early seasons of My Name is Earl and played a murderous magazine editor, a role she equated to that of Reese Witherspoon in Election. Scott Weinberg from DVDTalk.com expressed the following in his review of the movie: “Jaime Pressly is a hilarious person. I’d advise My Name is Earl fans to check out Jaime Pressly’s work in movies like Ringmaster, Tomcats, Joe Dirt, Torque, and Not Another Teen Movie if they haven’t already done so.

Pressly is a continually sneering, eye-rolling, attitude factory. Jaime would undoubtedly take home the medal if it were given for being “the consistently finest thing in a series of mostly terrible comedy.” No matter how awful the film is,  Jaime always seems like a crazy, animated character who somehow managed to transform into real flesh and blood. Jaime Pressly is gorgeous and all that, but she’s also witty, which just makes all her other qualities stronger “.

Pressly featured in DOA: Dead or Alive, a British-German-American martial arts action movie, as one of four female combatants trying to figure out what the invitational martial arts competition’s organiser is trying to hide. The movie only had a small audience in North America, even though it was rather successful in some other countries.

As a guest star on MADtv in 2006, she played Hillary Clinton in the My Name Is Earl parody “My Name Is Dubya,” in which George W. Bush  makes a list of all the bad things he has done in the past and corrects them one at a time. She also hosted the first-ever VH1 Rock Honors and a Saturday Night Live episode. She provided a bird’s voice in the smash computer-animated comedy Horton Hears a Who!, which also starred Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, and Will Arnett.

In the independent horror movie Demon Island from 2002, Pressly played a college student who was stranded on a haunting island. It was deemed a guilty pleasure by Felix Vasquez of Cinema Crazed, who said: “does what she can with her character and comes out as a really charming persona.”  She then appeared alongside Ice Cube in the action film Torque as a psychotic criminal on a motorcycle. She is often cast on the basis of her good looks and Southern sassiness, and The New Yorker stated this about this stage of her career: “She has had girlfriend roles in several forgettable teensploitation pictures.”
