Who is Ja Rule?

Jeffrey Bruce Atkins, who was born on February 29, 1976 and is better known by his stage name Ja Rule, is a rapper, songwriter, singer, record producer, and actor from the United States.  He was born in New York City and reared there, and he made his debut in 1999 with the album Venni Vetti Vecci and the lead track “Holla Holla.” Irv Gotti’s Murder Inc. Records, which had been operating under the name The Inc. prior to Ja Rule’s signing with the label in the 2000s, Between the years 1999 and 2005, Ja Rule had a number of hits that reached the top 20 of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Some of these songs include “Between Me and You”, “I’m Real” and “Ain’t It Funny”, which both topped the Hot 100, and the number 1 hit “Always on Time”, “Mes. Jeffrey Bruce Atkins, better known by his stage name Ja Rule, was brought into the world on February 29, 1976 in the New York City neighbourhood of Hollis by his parents, Debra and Will. When Jeffrey was still a very little child, his father abandoned the home.

Atkins was brought up as an only child because his younger sister Kristen passed away when she was still in his mother’s pregnancy when Atkins was 5 years old.  Due to the significant amount of time that his mother, Debra, spent working in the healthcare industry, Atkins was primarily raised as a Jehovah’s Witness by his grandparents. His mother was a healthcare worker.  When Atkins was 12 years old, his mother stopped practising the Jehovah’s Witness religion.  Soon after, Atkins began selling drugs in Hollis.

Atkins first up his career as a rap artist in 1994 by joining Cash Money Click, a hip-hop trio, alongside fellow members Chris Black and O-1. He told MTV News that the moniker “Ja Rule” came from a friend who addressed him by that name; other friends just called him “Ja.” He adopted the stage name “Ja Rule” and used it professionally. As a group, they collaborated with the record producer DJ Irv to create a variety of tracks, and in 1994, they independently released their debut single, titled “Get Tha Fortune.” After the band had acquired a recording contract with TVT Records, the song was reissued by the label in the latter part of the same year as the flip side of their second single, which was titled “4 My Click.”

Mic Geronimo was featured on the song “4 My Click,” which went on to become popular on pirate radio and eventually received exposure on Yo! MTV Raps. The group’s third single, “She Swallowed It,” was never officially released, but it was later bootlegged. The plans for the release of the group’s eponymous debut studio album were halted in 1995 after Chris Black was sentenced to five years in prison and the group was dropped from TVT. This caused the plans for the release of the group’s eponymous debut studio album to be cancelled. The band was dropped by their label, and shortly thereafter, they broke up and went their separate ways.

Following his dismissal from TVT, Ja Rule kept up a tight friendship with DJ Irv, who was serving at the time as an executive producer for Def Jam. DJ Irv, who is now known as Irv Gotti, was recruited to work as an A&R for the record company, and he was successful in securing a recording contract for Ja Rule with Def Jam.  He made his debut solo performance in 1995 on Mic Geronimo’s “Time to Build” alongside Jay-Z and DMX, both of whom were also in the beginning phases of their respective careers at the time. Later on, he was featured alongside The Lox, DMX, and Tragedy Khadafi on the track “Usual Suspects,” which was included on Mic Geronimo’s second studio album, Vendetta, which was released in 1997.

In addition, he appeared in a cameo capacity in the music video for “Walk In New York,” which was created by the Queens-based hardcore rap group Onyx. Later on in the year 1997, Def Jam agreed to let Irv Gotti operate his own record label under the name Murder Inc. Records. In addition to continuing to make guest appearances on songs by other artists, such as Method Man, Redman, Nas, DMX, LL Cool J, and Dru Hill, Ja Rule was promoted to the position of being the flagship artist for the label. Later, he was featured on Jay-hit Z’s single “Can I Get A…” from 1998, for which he had previously written the hook. When Jay-Z heard the track, he asked for it to be used for himself instead of Ja Rule’s debut single, which had been set for release. During this time, he performed under the stage name Jah, which was a small modification of his own name.

Returning to the Ja Rule moniker, his first single, “Holla Holla,” was out in March 1999. The song was an instant success, reaching its highest position on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 35. Venni Vetti Vecci, Ja Rule’s debut album, was released in 1999 and peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 with 184,000 copies sold in its first week. This success was fueled in large part by the popularity of Holla Holla. Because of how successful “Holla Holla” was, the album was eventually certified platinum in the United States.  Later on, a new version of “Holla Holla” featuring Jay-Z, Vita, Cadillac Tah, Black Child, Memphis Bleek, and Busta Rhymes was released.

Rule and his respective collaborators Lil’ Mo, Vita, Ashanti, and Case have been nominated for two American Music Awards and four Grammy Awards. After the success of his debut album, Venni Vetti Vecci, which was certified platinum, he went on to release his second and third albums, titled Rule 3:36 and Pain Is Love, respectively. Both albums reached number one on the US Billboard 200 album chart, which helped him break into the mainstream music industry.

They sold a combined total of over 15 million copies to a diverse audience, earning him triple platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America  and establishing themselves as his most successful albums to date. After that, Rule released his fourth, fifth, and sixth studio albums, which were titled The Last Temptation, Blood in My Eye , and R.U.L.E., respectively. Of these albums, The Last Temptation was certified platinum, and R.U.L.E. was certified gold. As of the year 2018, Rule has amassed more than 30 million record sales across the globe and has sold 14.4 million units in the United States. The year 2019 marked his debut on the series Growing Up Hip Hop: New York, which airs on WeTV.

Aside from his work in the music industry, Ja Rule is also famous for his involvement in the scam that was the Fyre Festival, which he and the con artist Billy McFarland co-founded. In November of 2019, it was determined that he did not violate any laws as a result of his participation in the festival.
