Who is Iris Apfel?

Iris Apfel was born on August 29, 1921, in Queens, New York. Sadye and Samuel Barrel’s only child, Iris adopted her parents’ traits—wit, independence, love of travel, and, of course, their taste for design. Her mother set the example, as the owner of a clothes business, she had a strong sense of personal style and resisted the gender stereotypes of the time. Apfel’s father, who was also an entrepreneur, was the owner of a mirror and glass company.

Apfel recalled vividly her early contacts with textiles, which sparked her interest in design. During trips to her grandmother’s apartment as a youngster, she rummaged through mounds of fabric scraps; delighted to find the range of colors, patterns, and textures, she fell in love with fashion. In her 90s, she could vividly recall the first item she had bought, when she was eleven years old—a 65-cent ornamental broach.

Iris Apfel had no intention of becoming an icon. Indeed, she never intended to pursue a career in fashion. She hoped to be a fashion journalist after receiving her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin. She began her career as an intern at Women’s Wear Daily in Manhattan and then worked with artist Robert Goodman.

There, she met Elinor Johnson, an interior designer who recruited her for her excellent eye, so launching her interior design career. Given the constraints imposed by World War II on sectors that depended on shipping from Europe, there was much potential to develop innovative designs domestically.

Apfel accepted a position as a reporter at Grossinger’s, a well-known resort in New York’s “Borscht Belt” shortly afterward. Numerous visitors appreciated her unique flair and asked her to design their on-site accommodations.

Strangers often complimented Apfel on her dress sense, but she never paid any heed to what others thought. Indeed, Apfel’s success was largely due to her reluctance to obey regulations. Throughout her early years in interior design, Apfel scoured the globe for fabrics, seeking to discover new and intriguing materials. Later in her career, when she transitioned into fashion, she became known for her dynamic and distinctive flare.

Apfel married Carl Apfel on February 22, 1948. (1914-2015). Already stylish and practical, she chose a pale pink wedding gown that could be re-worn.

Even more intimate was her resolve to abstain from having children. Although Apfel refused to identify as a feminist, she eschewed the lifestyle expected of a woman in the mid-twentieth century. Rather than that, she opted to concentrate on her work and a life of adventure and travel with her spouse.

Apfel has long defied gender stereotypes. In an age when women were supposed to appear “feminine,” Apfel insisted on acquiring a pair of trousers to complete an ensemble she had envisioned. Today, in a society that places an emphasis on women maintaining a look of youth, she maintains an impassioned acceptance of aging.

Apfel is a firm believer that women should not modify their physical features in order to seem younger than they are, and she proudly wears her age. Additionally, she bridges the divide between “high fashion” and “cheap” or “accessible” businesses by fusing designer and mass-market items.

Throughout the 1940s, as Apfel’s career in interior design flourished, a fresh opportunity presented itself. While on the lookout for an uncommon pattern, she and her husband came upon a textile mill owner who was able to manufacture the sample she was looking for. The Apfels thought that cooperation with the mill would benefit their work in the early phases of their relationship, and they quickly joined forces; the pair generated designs, and the mill built them. In 1951, they established Old World Weavers.

As Old World Weavers specialized in recreating materials from previous ages, the Apfels sought inspiration by going to nations with long histories of design. Following the war’s conclusion, they traveled through Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, South America, and East Asia, where they explored flea markets and tiny stores in search of artifacts for Apfel’s personal collection.

These were the locations where she had bespoke clothing fashioned using fabrics she found for decoration reasons. She also obtained a number of her most valued belongings at such stores, including the “Wandering Jew” ring, which she purchased in Dublin for her husband. The lion-shaped ring was not for sale, but Apfel persisted in acquiring it. She believes that it was originally owned by Egypt’s King Farouk and that once her husband wore it, he was unable to remove it until just before his death.

Soon after launching Old World Weavers, the Apfels were engaged by the United States Commission of Fine Arts to help with several White House restoration projects. From 1951 through 1992, their relationship with the commission lasted nine presidential administrations.

In 2005, Harold Koda, the curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s fashion department in New York City, approached Apfel with an uncommon request. He was anxious to replace a program he had been developing. He was aware of Apfel’s personal collection of costume jewellery and approached her with the idea of lending the museum a selection of items for exhibition. She gave her permission. As Koda and his team assembled the presentation, they determined that it would be more interesting if the jewellery was exhibited in its original context—as an accessory to clothes. Thus, he addressed Apfel once again, asking for a selection from her wardrobe and urging her to assist in the show’s construction by assembling outfits as she would for herself. When the display was complete, it contained over 80 ensembles and hundreds of accessories. For the first time, Apfel got the chance to demonstrate her extraordinary sense of fashion to the world.

Rara Avis (“Rare Bird”) was the Met’s first solo exhibition by a non-professional living fashion artist. Despite a dearth of publicity leading up to its launch, it was a smashing success. Its success catapulted Apfel to worldwide prominence. Rara Avis traveled up and down the East Coast over the next several months, with Apfel progressively taking on a curatorial role. Apfel chose to designate the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, the eventual successor of her entire collection after the exhibition.

Rara Avis catapulted Apfel to prominence by bestowing upon her awards and new endeavors. In 2011, she teamed with cosmetics manufacturer MAC to create a makeup collection inspired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She started creating jewellery for the Home Shopping network shortly afterward. And at the age of 97, she began her modeling career with the Forbes agency.

Apfel joined the University of Texas in New York City in 2012 as a visiting professor in the Division of Textiles and Apparel in the School of Human Ecology. She has aided in the development of a curriculum devoted to educating students on how to excel in the fashion industry.

Apfel is the author of three books: Dragon Threads: Celestial Kingdom Court Costumes: Chinese Textiles from the Iris Barrel Apfel and ATTATA Foundation Collections, Iris Apfel: Accidental Icon, and The Irreverent Iris Apfel. The essays trace Apfel’s path through the field of design, including her inspirations, work, and personal experiences.

Despite her celebrity, Apfel maintains a veil of anonymity. While she is on social media, her accounts are fan-run, and she follows rigorous regulations about fan interaction in order to prevent coming into touch with pathogens that may harm her health. Additionally, she keeps her closets secret, only allowing people to look inside on rare occasions. However, in 2015, Apfel participated in the Emmy-nominated documentary Iris, which provides viewers with an unprecedented glimpse inside her life and even some of her closets.
