Sir Ian McKellen CH CBE is a well-known English actor who was born on May 25th, 1939. His career has spanned seven decades, and he has given performances in a wide variety of genres, including popular fantasy and science fiction, as well as Shakespearean and modern theatre. In 1961, McKellen made his first professional appearance at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry, playing the role of Roper in the production of A Man for All Seasons. After spending the previous four years performing in small repertory theatres, McKellen made his debut appearance in the West End in the play A Scent of Flowers, which was considered a “notable success.” After joining Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre Company at the Old Vic in 1965, he went on to play roles at the Chichester Festival. At the Edinburgh Festival in 1969, McKellen made his breakthrough performances of Shakespeare’s Richard II and Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II, the latter of which caused a storm of protest over the enactment of the homosexual Edward’s lurid death. Both of these performances were with the Prospect Theatre Company.

The civil engineer and lay preacher that McKellen’s father was, as well as being of Protestant Irish and Scottish origin, was McKellen’s father. Both of McKellen’s grandfathers were ministers, and his great-great-grandfather, James McKellen, served as a “strict, evangelical Protestant pastor” in Ballymena, County Antrim. James McKellen was also McKellen’s great-great-grandfather.  His upbringing was profoundly Christian, yet it was not in any way conventional. “My upbringing was comprised of low-key nonconformist Christians who believed that you lived the Christian life in part by behaving in a Christian fashion to everyone you came in contact with,” I said.

His mother passed away from breast cancer when he was just 12 years old, and his father passed away when he was 25 years old.
