Who is Huma Qureshi ?

Huma Qureshi is an Indian actress, model, and producer who predominantly works in films that are made in the Hindi language. Her name is pronounced, and she was born on July 28, 1986. In addition to that, she has been nominated for three Filmfare Awards. While Qureshi was pursuing a career as a stage actor and model, she attended the University of Delhi and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in History, earning honours in the subject. She travelled to Mumbai after working in a number of theatre shows and then obtained a contract to appear in television advertisements for Hindustan Unilever that was for a period of two years.

Anurag Kashyap discovered her acting abilities while filming a commercial for a Samsung mobile device, and as a result, he offered her a contract with his production business that included three films. Qureshi entered the world on July 28th, 1986 in New Delhi, India, into a family that was Muslim.  Her mother, Ameena Qureshi, is a Kashmiri and works as a homemaker, while her father, Saleem Qureshi, is a restaurateur who owns and operates a chain of ten restaurants known as Saleem’s.

She is one of three brothers, the youngest of whom is the actor Saqib Saleem.  When Qureshi was a little child, his family moved to a new home in the Kalkaji neighbourhood in South Delhi. She graduated with Honors from the Bachelor of History programme at Gargi College, which is a part of the University of Delhi.  After that, she became a member of the Act 1 theatre group and participated in several theatrical plays. During her time spent working in theatre, N. K. Sharma served as both a guide and an acting instructor for her.

She has volunteered for a number of non-governmental organisations and has supported a documentary filmmaker.  In 2008, she relocated to Mumbai in order to try out for roles in movies, including an audition for a movie called Junction, which was ultimately scrapped: “I’d never even considered moving to Mumbai, never alone becoming an actress. But when a friend of mine asked me to audition for a movie called Junction, it got me to thinking about the industry. Unfortunately, the movie was never produced “.

Qureshi has committed to appearing in television advertisements for Hindustan Unilever for the next two years after signing a contract with the company.  She worked as a spokesperson for a variety of brands, including Samsung Mobile, Nerolac , Vita Marie, Saffola oil, Mederma lotion, and Pears soap.  While they were working together on a commercial for Samsung Mobile, the director Anurag Kashyap was so taken with her performance that he made a commitment to cast her in one of his movies. In his memory, Qureshi stated: “When it came down to it, I didn’t believe him.

Because this kind of thing happens so frequently in this line of work, I wasn’t holding my breath while I waited “. However, Kashyap fulfilled his word and signed her to a contract with his production firm, Anurag Kashyap Films, for a total of three films. Qureshi was supposed to make her film debut with Billa II, a Tamil gangster-thriller directed and produced by Chakri Toleti. She was one of the 700 hopefuls who made it through the audition process.

Despite having been cast in the role of the female lead, Qureshi exited the movie when it was delayed in order to honour other job commitments she had. When she was asked if she had any regrets, she responded as follows: “I have no regrets. I really wish things had turned out differently, but they didn’t. I am not the type of person who wallows in misery over past events. I was also approached for a number of other southern films; however, the roles offered to me were not what I had in mind for myself “.

Qureshi made her debut in the film industry with a supporting role in the first instalment of Anurag Kashyap’s two-part crime thriller Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 1. In the film, Qureshi played the supportive wife of a criminal. The film received widespread critical acclaim. She described her role as an egotistical airhead from a rural community who believes she is the most beautiful girl in the town: “Mohsina is always watching movies and trying to figure out how she might recreate the things she sees on the big screen. Bollywood is a significant source of inspiration for her “.

At the 65th annual Cannes Film Festival, where the film had its world premiere, both the film and Qureshi were met with praise by the festival’s jury members.  Govind Nihalani remarked on the actress’ screen presence, drawing parallels between herself and Smita Patil: “earthiness, sincerity, intensity, and warmth of personality were characteristics that set Smita apart from other actresses, in addition to the fact that she was a very fine and instinctive performer. In and of herself, Huma is a capable performer who is able to distinguish herself from the competition and maintain her position “.  The writer for Bollywood Hungama, Taran Adarsh, had this to say about Huma Qureshi: “Huma Qureshi, who is introduced much later in the film…is amazing.”

According to The Express Tribune, “[Huma] is different from the normal Bollywood stars in terms of looks.” On the yearly list of “Bollywood’s Top Ten Debutants” that is published by Rediff.com, Qureshi was ranked third in 2012, which was the highest female position. Due to the overwhelming acclaim she received for her performance in the first instalment of the Gangs of Wasseypur film series, she was offered the part of Mohsina in the sequel, which was titled Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 2. During the Cannes Film Festival, the film had its world premiere in the Directors’ Fortnight competition with its predecessor.

It opened to widespread applause from the press, and favourable reviews were given to her performance once again. The following is a quote from Madhureeta Mukherjee of The Times of India: “The most popular cheez in Wasseypur is Huma Qureshi, who is known for her unusually stunning appearance in addition to her garish wardrobe and designer sunglasses. She gracefully provides support as a powerful man’s “prouder” better-half, even in his darkest crimes,” and Taran Adarsh judged her to be “absolutely superb.”Both of these movies received her nods at a number of award ceremonies, including for Best Female Debut and Best Supporting Actress. Gangs of Wasseypur was referred to by Qureshi as a “film that changes your life.”

In the 2012 Indian crime drama Gangs of Wasseypur, which was released in two parts, Qureshi made her acting debut in a supporting role. Due to her outstanding performance in the movie, she was considered for a number of awards, including the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and the award for Best Supporting Actress. In the same year, she had roles in both the romantic comedy Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, in which she played the lead female character, and Ek Thi Daayan, in which she had a role.

She played lead roles in the anthology Shorts, as well as the lead role in the dark comedy Dedh Ishqiya. She also played minor roles in the vengeance drama Badlapur  and the Marathi road drama Highway. Films like as Jolly LLB 2 and Dobaara: See Your Evil featured Qureshi in roles that were later in his career. Her first foray into the world of online series came in 2019 with the dystopian drama Leila. The performance that Huma gave as Rani Bharti in the SonyLiv online series Maharani received a lot of positive feedback.
