Who is Hugh Laurie?

The name James Hugh Calum Actor, comedian, writer, and musician Laurie CBE  is a member of the British royal family. It was through his work as one half of the comedic double act Fry and Laurie with Stephen Fry that he first gained widespread recognition. During the 1980s and 1990s, the two men appeared in a number of productions together, including the BBC sketch comedy series A Bit of Fry & Laurie and the P. G. Wodehouse adaptation Jeeves and Wooster. Both of these projects were produced by the BBC.

He co-starred with Rowan Atkinson in the period comedy series Blackadder, which aired for two seasons between 1987 and 1989. The name James Hugh Calum On June 11th, 1959, Laurie was born in the Blackbird Leys neighbourhood of Oxford, England.  the youngest of four children born to Patricia  and William George Ranald Mundell “Ran” Laurie, who was a physician and an Olympic gold medalist in the coxless pairs  event at the 1948 London Games.  He is the younger of three children; his older brother’s name is Charles Alexander Lyon Mundell Laurie, and his older sisters’ names are Susan and Janet.

He had a tumultuous relationship with his mother, whom he described as “Presbyterian by character, by mood.”  He stated it later, “I was the source of her frustration. She didn’t like me.”  In 1989, when he was 73 years old, his mother passed away from motor neuron disease. She suffered from “painful, plodding paralysis” while being cared for by Laurie’s father, whom Laurie has described as “the finest man in the whole world.” According to Laurie, she battled the sickness for two years and endured it while he was caring for her.  Growing up in Oxford, Laurie attended the Dragon School from the age of seven to the age of thirteen.

Later on, she stated, “In all honesty, when I was younger I was a terrible child. Due to the fact that I was not particularly interested in things of a “bookey” type, I spent a significant portion of my youth smoking Number Six and cheating on French vocabulary tests.”  After graduating from that, he continued his education at Eton College, which he referred to as “the most private of private schools.”  In the year 1978, he enrolled at Selwyn College, Cambridge, which he claims he did “as a result of family tradition” due to the fact that his father attended that institution. Laurie mentions that his father was an accomplished rower at Cambridge and that he was “trying to follow in [his] father’s footsteps” when he rowed at the university.

He majored in social anthropology while studying archaeology and anthropology, and he received a third-class honours degree in 1981.  He graduated with his degree.  During a spell of glandular disease that forced Laurie to give up rowing, he became involved with the Cambridge Footlights, a university dramatic society that has been responsible for the development of many famous performers and comedians. There, he struck up a romantic relationship with Emma Thompson, and they continue to have a strong friendship to this day.

She was the one who put him in contact with his future comedy collaborator Stephen Fry. Later on, in an episode of “The Young Ones” called “Bambi,” the trio of Laurie, Fry, and Thompson mocked themselves as the University Challenge representatives of “Footlights College, Oxbridge.” Ben Elton, the co-writer of the series, rounded out their squad as the fourth member.

Like his father before him, Laurie competed in rowing while he was in high school and university. In the year 1977, he was a part of the junior coxed pair that won the British national title. Subsequently, he competed for Britain’s Youth Team at the 1977 Junior World Rowing Championships. In 1980, Laurie and his rowing partner, J.S. Palmer, competed for Eton Vikings rowing club and finished in second place in the Silver Goblets coxless pairs competition.

In addition, he competed in the 1980 Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race and was awarded a Blue for his efforts.  That year, Cambridge was defeated by a margin of five feet.  During this period, Laurie was working toward her goal of becoming a rower of Olympic calibre by putting in up to eight hours of practise every single day.  In addition to having membership in the Hermes Club and Hawks’ Club, he is currently a member of the Leander Club, which is recognised as one of the world’s oldest rowing clubs.

Both of Laurie’s parents were of Scottish ancestry, and they were members of the St. Columba’s Presbyterian Church in Oxford, which is now known as the United Reformed Church. He makes the observation that “believing in God didn’t play a significant role” in his family, but that “a certain approach to life and the living of it did” instead. After that, he made the following statement: “The concept of pleasure was one that was viewed with a great deal of scepticism, and pleasure was something that… I was going to argue that it needed to be earned, but even earning it wasn’t particularly effective in this case.

It was something that I remember up to this day, and I keep that with me. I don’t know what to do with pleasure, and I don’t know where to place it, so I guess that makes it a difficult thing to deal with.” Later on, he said, “I don’t believe in God, but I have this idea that if there were a God, or destiny of some kind looking down on us, that if he saw you taking anything for granted, he’d take it away.” He didn’t believe in God at the time, but he later changed his mind and began to believe in the existence of a higher power.

Laurie portrayed the role of Dr. Gregory House on the medical drama series House, which aired on Fox from 2004 until 2012. He was listed in the 2011 Guinness World Records as the most watched leading man on television and was one of the highest-paid actors in a television drama, earning £250,000  per episode of House. He received two Golden Globe Awards and many other accolades for the role.

In addition, he was recognised as the most watched leading man on television.  Other notable roles on television include that of arms dealer Richard Onslow Roper in the miniseries The Night Manager, for which he was nominated for a third Golden Globe Award and won; and Senator Tom James in the HBO sitcom Veep, for which he received a nomination for a tenth Emmy Award. Both of these roles were notable enough to earn him nominations.
