Their address was “near the end of the D  train, just off 205th Street, on Bainbridge Avenue and Hull Avenue.” Hunter was cast in Beth Henley’s plays Crimes of the Heart, and Off-The Broadway’s Miss Firecracker Contest as a result of a chance meeting with the playwright while the two were stranded together in an elevator. “It seemed very much like the beginning of the year 1982. It was on 49th Street between Broadway and Eighth, on the south side of the street, to be more specific “During the course of the conversation, Hunter recalled. “We were just confined for ten minutes, which is not too long.

Actually, it was a very pleasant exchange between the two of us. We were the only ones in the room.” Following this, Hunter went on to star in the film adaptation of Henley’s Miss Firecracker, a romantic drama directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Richard Dreyfuss; and the made-for-television docudrama Roe vs. Wade, which was released in 1989 and focused on the Supreme Court case Roe vs. Wade.

The decade of the 1990s came to a close with Hunter playing a supporting role in the indie drama Jesus’ Son and the role of a housekeeper divided between a bereaved widower and his son in the drama Woman Wanted, which was directed by Kiefer Sutherland.

After playing a supporting role in the Coen brothers’ O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Hunter was given the lead role in the television drama Harlan County War, which was released in the same year and told the story of labour conflicts that occurred among Kentucky coal mine miners. Before making her comeback to the big screen with a small part in the drama Moonlight Mile from 2002, Hunter continued her successful streak on the small screen with roles in When Billie Beat Bobby  and as the narrator of Eco Challenge New Zealand  Both of these roles were based on true events. The following year, Hunter appeared in the drama about redeemed people called Levity.

The horror film The Burning, which Hunter starred in as her first cinematic role, was released in 1981. Following his relocation to Los Angeles in 1982, Hunter made a number of appearances in television movies before being cast in a supporting role in the film Swing Shift in the year 1984. In the same year, she had her first experience working with the writing, directing, and producing team of brothers Ethan and Joel Coen in the film Blood Simple.
