Who is Helen Mirren?

Dame Helen Mirren DBE is an English actor. She is the only performer to have achieved the Triple Crown of Acting in both the United States and the United Kingdom. She has received a number of honours and is the only performer to have done so. She received an Academy Award and a British Academy Film Award for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen, a Tony Award and a Laurence Olivier Award for the same role in The Audience, three British Academy Television Awards for her performance as DCI Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect, four Primetime Emmy Awards and a Children’s and Family Emmy Award.

Helen Lydia Mironoff was born on July 26, 1945, in the Hammersmith neighbourhood of London, England, at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital. Her mother was English, while her father was Russian.  Her mother, Kathleen “Kitty” Alexandrina Eva Matilda, was a working-class woman from West Ham. She was the thirteenth of fourteen children born to a butcher whose own father was the butcher to Queen Victoria. Her maternal grandfather was the butcher to Queen Victoria.  Mirren’s father, Vasily Petrovich Mironoff, was a member of an exiled family of Russian aristocracy. His father, Pyotr Vasilievich Mironov, brought him to England when he was two years old.

As a member of the Russian gentry, Pyotr Mironov was the proprietor of a family estate located close to what is now known as Gagarin. His mother, Mirren’s great-grandmother, was Countess Lydia Andreevna Kamenskaya. She was an aristocrat and a descendant of Count Mikhail Fedotovich Kamensky, a notable Russian general during the Napoleonic Wars. His mother was Mirren’s great-grandmother.

Pyotr Mironov was a colonel in the Imperial Russian Army and participated in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner. In 1917, he and his family were left stranded as a result of the Russian Revolution. At the time, he had become a diplomat and was in the process of negotiating a weapons transaction in Britain. He made his home in England and started working as a taxi driver in London so that he could provide for his family.

Before World War II, Vasily Mironoff was a member of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and also worked as a cab driver. He also played the viola in the orchestra. He was an ambulance driver during the war, and served in the East End of London during the Blitz.

In 1938, he wed Kathleen Rogers in Hammersmith, and he anglicised his first name to Basil at some point before 1951. The marriage took place in Hammersmith.  Helen’s father quit playing in an orchestra not long after she was born and went back to his old job as a taxi driver so the family could make ends meet. Later on in his career, he served as an examiner for driving tests until eventually becoming a civil servant in the Ministry of Transport.

In 1951, he used a document called a deed poll to legally alter the name of his family to Mirren.  Mirren views her upbringing to have been “extremely anti-monarchist”.  She was the second of three children; she has an older sister Katherine  and has a younger brother Peter Basil. Her cousin on her father’s side was the model and former Bond girl Tania Mallet.  Mirren spent her childhood in the town of Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.

She went to Hamlet Court primary school in Westcliff-on-Sea, where she played the lead role in a school production of “Hansel and Gretel,” and then she attended St. Bernard’s High School for Girls in Southend-on-Sea, where she also acted in school productions there. After that, she went to a teaching college in London called the New College of Speech and Drama. It was “housed within Anna Pavlova’s old home, Ivy House,” and it was located on North End Road. At the age of eighteen, she successfully auditioned for the National Youth Theatre; and at the age of twenty, she played Cleopatra in the National Youth Theatre production of Antony and Cleopatra at the Old Vic, a role which she says “launched my career” and led to her signing with agent Al Parker.

Mirren was honoured with the title of Dame in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2003 for her contributions to the world of theatre, and her investiture took place at Buckingham Palace. She has been honoured with a number of accolades over her career, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2013, the BAFTA Fellowship for lifetime achievement in 2014, and the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2022.

Mirren was given the opportunity to join the Royal Shakespeare Company after her performance as Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra at the National Youth Theatre in 1965. She went on to make her West End theatrical debut in 1975. After that, she went on to find success in the cinema and television industries, appearing in films such as The Madness of King George, Gosford Park, and The Last Station, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for each of those performances.

She received three consecutive British Academy Television Awards for Best Actress and two Primetime Emmy Awards for her part on Prime Suspect, which lasted from 1991 to 2006. This record of consecutive wins was shared with Dame Julie Walters. She portrayed Queen Elizabeth I in the television series Elizabeth I  and Queen Elizabeth II in the film The Queen, making her the only performer to have represented both of the reigning Elizabeths on screen. Elizabeth I  and The Queen  were released in 2005 and 2006 respectively.
