Two of her half-brothers are older.  Her father worked in sales and marketing, while her mother was a stay-at-home mom. She was raised in a village close to the South Downs. She was a gymnast when she was little but switched to acting after suffering a spine injury.

She employed herself at a Brighton boutique in the year 2002. Christie’s height caught the eye of photographer Polly Borland in 2002. Between 2002 and 2008, she posed as Christie for the renowned Bunny photo series. According to Christie, she believed that the images, in which she is primarily naked, could help her confront her body and question traditional ideas of femininity. She later admitted that she had been taken aback by her decision to accept them. Christie was given the role of Brienne of Tarth, a warrior, in the second season of HBO’s fantasy drama Game of Thrones in July 2011.

Many readers of the novels love her character, who is an extraordinarily tall, strong, and plain-looking lady. Christie had been suggested for the part by fans long before auditions even took place.  Christie claimed that in order to portray Brienne, a role that she was excited about playing after reading the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, which the programme adapts, she could draw on her own experiences of having been bullied for her height and androgynous appearance.  She started dressing in unisex clothing to assist her embody her character’s more male mindset in order to prepare even for the auditions.

She also started an intense training regimen and gained almost a stone  of muscle mass.  George R. R. Martin, the co-creator of the series, producer, and author of the novels, claims that she landed the part almost without a fight following an arresting audition in which she seemed to be Brienne already dressed and made up.  She worked out a lot, took classes in equestrian, sword fighting, and stage combat after being cast in the part.

Her first appearance was in the second season’s third episode, “What Is Dead May Never Die,” which aired on April 15, 2012. Nina Shen Rastogi applauded her “eloquent and economical physical performance,” saying that her walk, attitude, and mien successfully communicated Brienne’s single-minded devotion to her self-given ambition to become a knight. Brienne’s first performance was favourably received by critics.

Christie received a nomination for the 2014 Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series for her portrayal as Brienne in the third season of the programme.  She was nominated for four Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series as a member of the cast.

In addition to her role in Game of Thrones, Christie starred as Lexi, the 17-year-old Princess of the Nekross, the alien species conquering earth, in the British scientific fantasy series Wizards versus Aliens created by Doctor Who writers Russell T Davies and Phil Ford from 2012 to 2013.

She donned a lot of makeup for the part, but as Lucy, Lexi’s human form, she also displayed her regular physique.  Additionally, she played a supporting role in the 2013 film The Zero Theorem, directed by Terry Gilliam.

Simon Callow, an author and actor, has been Christie’s mentor ever since drama school. Her theatrical experience also includes as Mag Wildwood in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the Queen in Shakespeare’s Cymbeline with Tom Hiddleston, and “standing out” as Lucifer in Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus.

Christie made her on-screen debut in Nathaniel Mellors’ 2007 short film The Time Surgeon, which he also wrote and directed. She continued to appear in his works in the years that followed, including the first four instalments of his Ourhouse series of experimental short films, which were released between 2010 and 2011 as a part of art exhibitions or in specific public screenings, and Seven Ages of Britain Teaser, a brief TV film serving as an introduction to the documentary series Seven Ages of Britain’s final episode.

As an associate producer and person responsible for casting, costumes, props, and make-up, she was also active in Ourhouse behind the scenes. She also had a small part in Terry Gilliam’s 2009 movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which marked her feature film debut. In 2009, she appeared in the “Damaris” music video with Patrick Wolf.In 2005, she received her degree from Drama Centre London.

Due to her unusually tall physique, she was informed she “would definitely never work because  didn’t look the same as most performers,” and after expressing a desire to work in film, her agent even said, “Well, good luck with that.” The Orlando performance of Tilda Swinton gave her the motivation to keep working toward this objective. She recalls thinking in a 2017 interview “She is obviously beyond the room because she is in a movie and otherworldly. I came to the conclusion that maybe there is room for me, too.”
