Who is Graham Phillips?

Graham  Phillips is a British YouTuber, freelance journalist, and documentary filmmaker.  He has worked in the past as a stringer for the Russian state-owned television networks RT  and Zvezda.  Graham William Phillips was born and raised in the United Kingdom.  On his YouTube channel, Phillips has been providing coverage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine from the Russian side since March 2022. At first, he reported from the Chernihiv region of Ukraine, then he reported from Mariupol, then he reported from Donetsk, and most recently, he reported from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic.

In the early 2000s, Phillips received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Dundee, where he studied history and philosophy concurrently. After that, he relocated to London where he held the position of clerk at the Central Office of Information, which is no longer in operation. In this role, he was responsible for reviewing government websites and preparing reports for the Parliament of the United Kingdom.  Phillips made his initial trip to Ukraine in 2009, when he went to Dnipropetrovsk to watch an England football match. This was his first time in the country. He moved to Ukraine in 2010, at the age of 30, and began working as an English teacher.

Phillips started a blog called Brit in Ukraine, which contains articles on politics, history, life in Ukraine, UEFA Euro 2012, and sex tourism, including entries about prostitutes, call girls, foreign-bride hunters, and sex tourists. In addition, the blog contains articles on sex tourism. The blog was subsequently rebranded under the name Graham W. Phillips before being taken down.  After attending the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil as a journalist and a soccer fan, Phillips returned to report from Donbas in the summer of that same year. This was an apparent violation of the terms of his May release.

Phillips was swiftly captured by the Armed Forces of Ukraine again at Donetsk International Airport, before being held for three days, and then deported into Poland, banned from Ukraine for three years.  Phillips alleged that he was mistreated by the Armed Forces of Ukraine during his custody at the airport, while Ukraine accused Phillips of “betting terrorism” as a “Kremlin propagandist.” Phillips stated that he was mistreated by the Armed Forces of Ukraine during his incarceration at the airport.

In spite of the fact that he was banned from entering the country, Phillips travelled back to Ukraine in August of 2014. While reporting from the frontlines of the conflict in Donbas in November 2014, Phillips was injured in the back by a piece of shrapnel. At the beginning of 2015, Phillips’s profile was included on the contentious Ukrainian Myrotvorets website.

In the United Kingdom, Phillips attempted to barge into the Institution of Stepan Bandera in London in April of 2015. He shouted that the museum was a “Nazi collaborator museum,” but the police were able to remove him from the grounds. Phillips maintained his reporting from Donbas throughout both 2015 and 2016, frequently producing results that were contentious.

In a video that was broadcast by Phillips on September 17, 2016, just before a prisoner exchange, he is seen mocking a crippled Ukrainian prisoner of war who had lost both of his arms and his sight as a result of an explosion caused by a mine. This provoked a strong reaction in Ukraine.  The Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group demanded that journalistic non-governmental organisations express their disapproval of Phillips’ activities. Judith Gough, the British Ambassador to Ukraine, expressed her shock and outrage at the events that transpired.

During the year 2012, Phillips held a job as a journalist for the publication What’s On in Kyiv. After quitting his position as editor of What’s On, Phillips went on to work as a freelance journalist based in Ukraine. During this time, he published a number of articles, including two for the New Statesman and three for the Kyiv Post, among other publications. As a freelance journalist in Ukraine, Phillips’ work frequently centred on covering criminal cases. For example, he reported on the slayings of Oksana Makar, a Ukrainian woman who was raped and burned alive, and Barry Pring, a British man who was killed outside of Kyiv.

Phillips penned a piece for Pravda in November 2012 that discussed the gloomy environment in Ukraine following the highs of Euro 2012 as well as worries for the future of the country. In the beginning of 2013, Phillips published a book under his own name titled Ukraine – Men, Women, Sex, Murder. The book detailed the conclusion of his investigation into the passing of Barry Pring. Following legal action taken by Anna Ziuzina, the lady who he blamed for Pring’s death, the book was pulled from shelves and made unavailable for purchase.

Phillips published a series of pieces on his blog in 2012 and 2013 that were highly critical of Ukrainian nationalist politician Stepan Bandera and the Ukrainian nationalist organisation Svoboda. In these articles, Phillips referred to Bandera as a “Nazi,” and he referred to Svoboda as “neo-Nazis.”

Phillips opposed Euromaidan from the beginning, in November 2013, and began doing interviews with the Russian state channel RT at this time. He then went on to work for them part-time as a reporter in Donbas in April 2014, covering the Russo-Ukrainian War, after multiple RT crews were denied entry into Ukraine. Phillips was opposed to Euromaidan because he believed it would lead to a civil war in Ukraine.

In addition, Phillips was doing street interviews all throughout Ukraine for the purpose of his YouTube channel at this time. While reporting from Mariupol in the month of May 2014, Phillips was taken into custody by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. After being held for a day, he was finally allowed to go free under the stipulation that he would immediately depart Ukraine. The detention of Phillips prompted strong condemnation from RT.

Phillips has been accused of using his job to disseminate pro-Russian propaganda and conspiracy theories, as well as being commonly branded as “pro-Russia” and “pro-Kremlin.”  Phillips asserts that his reporting is impartial on his own behalf.  In 2015, an organisation with ties to the Russian Federal Security Service, the successor to the Soviet KGB, presented Phillips with a medal in recognition of his service and presented him with the medal.

Sanctions were put into place against him by the government of the United Kingdom in July of 2022.After conducting an interview with a captured British-born Ukrainian soldier named Aiden Aslin, he was accused of committing a war crime by a member of the British Parliament named Robert Jenrick. In order to defend the interview, Phillips has stated that he has “nothing to conceal” and that Aslin himself “wanted the interview.” Aslin is the one who initiated the interview.
