Who is Ghostface Killah?

Dennis Coles, who was born on May 9, 1970 and is better known by his stage name Ghostface Killah, is a member of the American hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan. He goes by the stage name Ghostface Killah.  Following the critical and commercial success that followed the release of Enter the Wu-Tang, the members of the group moved on to pursue solo careers, with various degrees of achievement in each case. In 1996, Ghostface Killah released his debut solo album titled Ironman.

The album was met with favourable reviews from music critics. In the years that followed, he was able to maintain his level of popularity, releasing albums such as Supreme Clientele  and Fishscale, both of which received widespread critical praise. His stage name was derived from the name of a character in the kung fu movie The Mystery of Chess Boxing, which was released in 1979.  He established his own record label, Starks Enterprises, and is the CEO of the company. Ghostface, a former roommate of Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA, was instrumental in bringing the other seven members of the group together.

Ghostface had numerous guest appearances on fellow Clan member Raekwon’s debut album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, which was released in 1995. Ghostface participated in almost every song and was given nearly equal prominence for his contributions.  “It was comforting to have my boy next to me, Ghostface, who basically comes from the same lifestyle as I do. This made me feel like I wasn’t alone.

And we were able to sit down and come up with a plan that the two of us were able to respect, as well as a plan that basically incorporated all of the members of the crew “Raekwon was asked about Ghostface’s participation in the project, and he responded by saying. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… was supposed to be performed like a film, with Raekwon playing the role of the “star,” Ghostface Killah playing the role of the “guest star,” and producer RZA playing the role of the “director.”

Additionally, he was involved in the composition of songs for the soundtracks of the films Sunset Park and Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. Both of these songs were included on his debut solo album, Ironman, which was released in 1996. The album, which debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, featured a more pronounced soul influence than previous Wu-Tang releases, and future albums by Ghostface would continue to feature this stylistic trait. The album also had a more pronounced funk influence than previous Wu-Tang releases.

Ghostface became a member of the Def Jam family in the year 2003. The Pretty Toney Album was released by Ghostface in April of 2004, a few months after he had temporarily dropped “Killah” from his stage name. The album did not feature any members of the Wu-Tang Clan, despite the fact that it had two productions by RZA. Instead, it featured collaborations with Missy Elliott, D-Block, and Jacki-O. The album was featured on various “best of the year” lists; for instance, it was Pitchfork Media’s #9 album of the year.

The singles “Tush” and “Run,” which were collaborations with Missy and Jadakiss respectively, received moderate success in the clubs and on the charts.  Ghostface was also featured on the song “On My Knees” by the 411, an R&B group from the United Kingdom. The song was a hit in both the United Kingdom and Australia. After that, Ghostface collaborated with a group of his students called the Theodore Unit to create an album that they called 718. In addition, Ghostface was featured on “He Comes,” which was included on The Grind Date album. Put It on the Line was the title of a collaborative album that Ghostface and Trife Da God, the breakout star of Theodore Unit, released in November of 2005.

Supreme Clientele was the second studio album that Ghostface released, and it was released in the year 2000. The album reached its highest position on the Billboard 200  after receiving positive reviews from music journalists. It contained the hit track “Apollo Kids,” which featured Raekwon and sampled “Cool Breeze” by Solomon Burke. “Apollo Kids” was included on the album.  Another track taken from the album, “Cherchez La Ghost,” became a moderately successful club smash.

Supreme Clientele was a turning point in terms of RZA’s impact on Ghostface’s sound. On Ironman, the album that came before Supreme Clientele, every song on the album except for one was produced by RZA. However, on Supreme Clientele, just six of the tracks on the album were produced by RZA. Although he made a smaller contribution of beats to the project than he did to Ironman, RZA personally oversaw the mixing and production of the album as a whole, which contributed to the cohesive tone of Supreme Clientele.

After releasing Supreme Clientele, Ghostface quickly got to work on recording his next album, Bulletproof Wallets, which featured a strong R&B influence and was released a year later. Raekwon and Carl Thomas appeared on the song “Never Be the Same Again,” which was the album’s lead hit. It produced another minor club hit called “Flowers,” which featured guest vocals from fellow Wu-Tang members Method Man and Raekwon. It also produced a popular single called “Ghost Showers,” which featured Madame Majestic, whose other significant claim to fame is that she sings on the popular Wu-Tang track called “Gravel Pit.”

Ghostface Killah has received widespread recognition, for his raucous, rapid-fire flow,  as well as for his emotionally charged stream-of-consciousness narratives that include cryptic slang and non-sequiturs. MTV listed him as a “honourable mention” on their list of the “Greatest MCs of All Time” in 2006. At the same time, the editors of About.com put him in their list of the “Top 50 MCs of Our Time” and referred to him as “one of the most imaginative storytellers of our time.”

He was said described as “rap’s finest storyteller” by Q magazine.  According to Pitchfork Media, “Ghostface has unequalled storytelling instincts; he may be the best, most colourful storyteller rap has ever seen.”He has been described as “a compulsive storyteller” by NPR, which also claims that “his fiction is painterly.”
