Who is Freema Agyeman?

Frema Agyeman, also known as Freema Agyeman, An actress from England. In addition to playing Crown Prosecutor Alesha Phillips in Law & Order: UK, Amanita Caplan in the Netflix science fiction drama Sense8, and Dr. Helen Sharpe in the NBC medical drama New Amsterdam, she first gained notoriety for her role as the Doctor’s companion Martha Jones in the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who.

Agyeman decided to use a different spelling of her birth name, Frema, as her professional name when she started her professional acting career in order to avoid pronunciation issues. Three parts in the Doctor Who season from 2006 saw Agyeman give auditions. She attended the audition on June 24, 2005, for the role of Sally Jacobs in “The Christmas Invasion,” but Anita Briem won the part because she more closely matched the conception of the character as a “ice cool blonde” by the production team.

Later, Agyeman went through the audition process for the roles of Esme and Adeola Oshodi in the films “Army of Ghosts” and “Rise of the Cybermen” respectively. Esme was ultimately removed from the finished script, but Agyeman was chosen for Adeola following her audition. She began filming for the series in December 2005[note needed] and debuted as Adeola on July 1, 2006. Producers took advantage of Agyeman’s training in gymnastics, horseback riding, martial arts, and dancing to give her more physically demanding action scenes.

Agyeman’s variety throughout her three auditions delighted the production crew, and they invited her back as a serious contender for the role of the new companion. Before a final screen test with Tenth Doctor actor David Tennant, she went to another audition. Agyeman’s hotel room door was left with a comforting letter from Tennant, which helped the actress relax.  Billie Piper’s replacement, Agyeman, was confirmed to the media on July 5th, 2006, after much curiosity over her replacement. In August 2006, Agyeman started filming for the third season, which was completed in March 2007.

On March 31, 2007, she appeared on TV for the first time in the episode “Smith and Jones” as medical student Martha. Adeola was Martha’s cousin, according to a line of dialogue. Every episode of the series had Agyeman maintaining the role. After realising how unhealthy their relationship had become, Martha left the Doctor on her own choice in the series finale, “Last of the Time Lords,” but she committed to come back. Additionally, Agyeman provided the voice for the character in the animated series The Infinite Quest, which ran for twelve episodes in 2007 on television.

Agyeman received plaudits for her portrayal of Martha in 2007 at several award shows. She won the Best Newcomer honour at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards in June.  She was one of the top four nominees for Most Popular Actress at the 13th National Television Awards in October after winning the People’s Choice award for Favorite Female TV Star at the 5th Screen Nation Film & TV Awards.  She was nominated for Best Actress at both the TV Quick Awards and the Golden Nymph Awards for the role.  The Observer interviewed Agyeman in December and included her as one of their Faces of 2007.

The following year, Agyeman appeared as Martha in five episodes of the show’s fourth season. Agyeman said she would be open to playing the part again after the series conclusion.  She later joined a number of other former cast members in returning to the show to commemorate David Tennant’s final appearance in “The End of Time.” The Last Dodo, Wetworld, The Pirate Loop, Martha in the Mirror, and The Story of Martha are five of the Doctor Who New Series Adventures novels starring Martha that Agyeman read aloud in conjunction with her appearance on the show.

The ITV soap opera Crossroads’ Lola Wise served as Agyeman’s most well-known television performance prior to landing the role of Martha Jones in Doctor Who. At the 2003 British Soap Awards, she received nominations for her performance in the categories of Best Newcomer and Sexiest Female. The BBC’s enduring medical drama Casualty, Sky One’s airline drama Mile High, and ITV’s police procedural The Bill—in which she had two distinct appearances—all featured Agyeman in modest guest roles. She portrayed Mary Ogden, a scene of crime officer, in a Silent Witness episode in 2005.

In the indie drama Rulers and Dealers, written and directed by Stephen Lloyd Jackson, Agyeman made her big screen debut as Nana. After leaving Doctor Who, Agyeman returned to Torchwood in which she played Martha Jones once more and appeared as Tattycoram in the BBC period drama Little Dorrit. She made her US television debut in 2013’s The Carrie Diaries, a prequel to Sex and the City starring Larissa Loughlin. Agyeman was born on March 20, 1979, in London. Her father, Osei, is Ghanaian, while her mother, Azar, is Iranian Kurdish. When she was young, they got divorced. Leila, Agyeman’s elder sister, and Dominic, his younger brother, are siblings.

Agyeman grew up to be a practising Roman Catholic despite the fact that her father was raised as a Methodist and her mother as a Muslim. She later studied performing arts and drama at Middlesex University and attended the Anna Scher Theatre School in Islington during the summer of 1996.
