Who is Franchesca Ramsey?

Franchesca Ramsey, commonly known as Chescaleigh, is an American comedian, activist, television personality, YouTube star, and actress who has made appearances on MTV and MSNBC. She was born on November 29, 1983.  She immediately became well-known in the media after her YouTube comments on racial issues went viral, and she developed a career as a writer, producer, and performer based on her unintentional activism, finding herself in a position where she was expected to serve as a social issues coach or counsellor. Ramsey was born in 1983 on November 29.

She was raised in West Palm Beach, Florida, as an only child. She began using computers at a young age and had a website while still in high school in the 1990s.  She tried acting but found it emotionally taxing and even “abusive,” so she attended a performing arts high school and studied graphic design in college. In 2009, after her future husband was awarded a scholarship to attend St. John’s University to study law, she relocated to New York City with him. When Ramsey’s 2012 YouTube video “Shit White Girls Say…to Black Girls” went viral and resulted in interviews with the BBC, Anderson Cooper, and NPR, she was employed by Ann Taylor as a graphic designer.

Among other things, Ramsey’s YouTube channel features topical and socially conscious comedy sketches and song parodies. Her channel on Chescalocs is about natural hair.  Ramsey won the People/YouTube Red Carpet Reporter competition in 2008, which dramatically boosted the popularity of her channel.  Ramsey started hosting the MTV News web series Decoded in 2015, in which she talks about racial and cultural problems. Ramsey’s videos have been featured on MTV, The Huffington Post, CollegeHumor, Jezebel, and Glamour, among other media outlets.

The programme received a Webby Award in 2017 for Public Service and Activism. Ramsey has been the subject of online doxing, trolling, and abuse.  Ramsey is one of several African-American women who “experience regular, planned campaigns of abuse designed to force them off of the internet,” according to author Ijeoma Oluo. Early in 2016, Ramsey began working as a contributor and writer on Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore. Ramsey and her husband Patrick co-hosted a podcast called Last Name Basis where they discussed their personal life and the outside world. With a total of 112 episodes, the podcast ran from January 2015 until it stopped in March 2019 due to their divorce.

Ramsey has also made appearances in TV shows like Superstore, Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, Broad City, and others.Comedy Central revealed in April 2017 that they were creating a late-night comedy pilot with Ramsey as the executive producer and star. In her 2018 book Well, That Escalated Quickly: Memoirs and Mistakes of an Accidental Activist, Ramsey tells how, in the wake of the rapid media attention surrounding her YouTube remark, she unintentionally became an activist on issues of racism and online abuse.

She claims that the book is meant to guide readers through the online world, including her own errors. She speaks about why she and others have occasionally utilised destructive behaviour online to deal with offline personal stresses and disappointments, and she freely admits to engaging in “troll behaviour.” She recommends logging off for a while, provides tips for enduring online abuse, and expresses sorrow about choosing to interact with online trolls rather than ignore them.

Ramsey experienced racial harassment after winning the People/YouTube Red Carpet Reporter competition in 2008. The persecution started with a comment thread stalker who used racial slurs at Ramsey. Ramsey’s work email account began receiving nasty emails from that person, who afterwards launched malware attacks against her employer’s email server. The stalker then started posting private information to give the impression that he was following and watching her in person.
In an effort to stop the harassment, Ramsey claimed to have a good working relationship with YouTube staff, and she was chosen to take part in a survey of YouTube creators about the changes they would like to see. She stated that she wanted the option to restrict comments to channel subscribers and to block users based on their IP addresses. When YouTube remained silent, the harassment persisted. In a 2013 SXSW panel, Ramsey talked about how minorities are frequently the focus of harassment. She stated that she tries to ignore trolls or put them on display for ridicule in order to laugh them off.

As part of John Green’s Creators for Change initiative, which aims to “amplify the voices of people who are not normally heard,” Ramsey was one of five YouTubers to receive a US$25,000 grant. Green wants to support those in a position to speak up and create online communities that are hostile to harassment, hate speech, and xenophobia. Ramsey claims that her extensive internet expertise has enabled her to disregard online hostility.

She claimed that while she has no qualms about speaking out on issues, she has learned to avoid mentioning specific YouTubers by name and to speak in “generalities” instead because she is aware that upsetting a fan base will result in “100,000 tweets from kids” calling her racial slurs, harassing her husband, or calling her at work.  When faced with harassment or overt discrimination, she counsels ladies to pick their battles and find ways to enlighten others in the workplace. She also says that it gets easier with practise.
