Who is Fka Twigs?

An English singer, songwriter, and dancer with the stage name FKA Twigs, Tahliah Debrett Barnett was born on January 17, 1988. She was reared in Cheltenham and moved to London at the age of 17, where she worked as a backup dancer for a number of well-known performers before making her own musical debut with EP1. On January 17, 1988, Tahliah Debrett Barnett was born in Cheltenham as the lone child of a Jamaican musician father and an English dancer and gymnast mother.

Her mother is of Spanish descent as well. She was reared by her mother and stepfather, a “jazz fanatic of English, Spanish, Jamaican, and Egyptian descent,”, who she defined as such in her biography. She did not meet her biological father until she was 18 years old. Cheltenham, where Barnett was raised, was later described as being “sort of in the middle of nowhere”. From the ages of 11 to 18, she studied in the private, coed, Catholic St. Edward’s School. Her attendance at the institution was paid for by an academic scholarship. She began taking opera and ballet training at an early age and participated in various shows at St. Edward’s School.

Barnett was featured in a photo shoot for the i-D magazine cover in August 2012.  Due to the way her joints crack, she earned the nickname Twigs.  When the Twigs, a pair of twins who have been performing and recording since 1994, asked her to modify her stage name, she responded by adding the initialism FKA to her name.  Despite claims from a number of publications that “FKA” stands for “Formerly Known As,” Barnett has stated in numerous interviews that the initials mean nothing specific: “It’s merely a group of letters. I intended to resemble FK1 Twigs or AFK Twigs.

I wanted a group of letters that sounded strong and somewhat macho. Just working, FKA. It is just uppercase letters and has no meaning.” Barnett was featured on The Fader’s 91st issue cover in April 2014.  She started working on her debut studio album while going through a “self-hatred” phase, which she believes is “very natural” for an adolescent. She released “Two Weeks,” the lead single from her upcoming album, accompanied with a music video on June 24. Then, Barnett produced and served as a guest star in the music video for the Lucki Eck$ song “Ouch Ouch.” [44] On July 29, “Pendulum,” the second single, was made available. On August 6, Young Turks released her first studio album, LP1.

The album earned a lot of positive reviews and was highly ranked on many critics’ year-end lists. Time gave it a favourable review, noting that Barnett had “made that shift to one of the most fascinating and multifaceted performers in R&B,” and later selected it, along with Clash, as the year’s best album. She later revealed a world tour that would begin on October 2 at Brighton’s The Dome and conclude on December 3 at The Social in Orlando, Florida.

Barnett joined the A+ roster of London-based production business Academy Films that same August. On August 20, she posted three videos that she had directed to her YouTube channel: “Wet Wipez,” featuring the same-named London dance group; “tw-ache,” a remix of the EP1 song “Ache;” and “Ouch Ouch,” a video for the Lucki Eck$ single that she had also produced.

On December 4th, 2012, Barnett self-released her EP1 first album on Bandcamp. For each song, she uploaded a video to her YouTube channel. The music video for her debut single, “Water Me,” which was directed by Jesse Kanda, was released in August 2013.  In the same month, Barnett was featured in The Guardian’s “New Band of the Day” section as “the UK’s best example to date of ethereal, twisted R&B.”  The Young Turks record company issued Barnett’s second extended play, EP2, in September.

It was created by Arca and Barnett. EP2 received an 8/10 rating from Pitchfork. She was selected by Spotify for their Spotlight on 2014 list and nominated for the BBC’s Sound of 2014 award in December.  Later, Barnett was listed as one of Billboard’s 2014 “14 Artists to Watch.” Barnett started performing in youth clubs when he was 16 years old.

She enrolled at the BRIT School when she was 17 years old and went to South London to pursue a career as a dancer. She switched to Croydon College to pursue a fine arts degree after switching her focus from dance to music.  She performed in music videos for performers including Kylie Minogue, Plan B, Ed Sheeran, Taio Cruz, Dionne Bromfield, Jessie J, and Wretch 32 as a backup dancer.  She performed as Jessie J’s backup dancer in the 2010 video for “Do It Like a Dude” and in the 2011 video for “Price Tag.”  She also had an appearance in the “Yeah Right” music video by Dionne Bromfield.

She performed as a backup dancer at a grocery store in a two-minute BBC comedy piece titled “Beyoncé Wants Groceries” in 2011.  She started working with local record producers at the age of 18 in an effort to develop her own musical style. She wrote the song “I’m Your Doll” about this time and ended up putting out a bunch of what she called “very awful recordings.” She once held down a hostess position in a strip club and occasionally sang at The Box in Soho.

LP1  Barnett’s debut studio album, peaked at number 30 on the US Billboard 200 and number 16 on the UK Albums Chart. It was also a Mercury Prize nominee for that year. After taking a four-year break, she subsequently released the EP M3LL155X  and her second studio album, Magdalene . She released the mixtape Caprisongs after joining Atlantic Records. She frequently receives praise for her work, which has been dubbed “genre-bending” and draws from a variety of genres, such as electronic music, trip hop, R&B, and avant-garde.
