Her portrayal as Edie Doyle (whose brother’s death sets the film’s narrative in action) garnered her a British Academy of Film and Television Award nomination for “Most Promising Newcomer,” beating out Claire Trevor, Nina Foch, Katy Jurado, and Jan Sterling.

“By choosing Eva Marie Saint—a rookie to movies from TV and Broadway—Mr. Kazan has come up with a gorgeous and blond craftsman who does not have to rely on these traits,” film reviewer A. H. Weiler stated in his review for The New York Times. Her private school education is no barrier to falling in love with the right stranger.

She brings sympathy and sensitivity to genuine romance in the midst of catastrophe.”Saint’s cinematic career was established after the film’s popularity. For the role, she was paid $7,500. “[Elia] Kazan put me in a room with Marlon Brando,” Saint said in a 2000 interview with Premiere magazine.

‘Brando is your sister’s boyfriend,’ he explained. You’re not used to being among teenagers. ‘Under no circumstances let him enter.’ I’m not sure what he said to Marlon; you’ll have to ask him—best wishes! [Brando] entered and began taunting me. He threw me off. I was also off balance throughout the shoot.” In a 2010 interview, she repeated the story.

She won $50,000 for her role in That Certain Feeling (1956) with Bob Hope. She was subsequently offered $100,000 to star in Raintree County (1957), a grandiose Civil War epic starring Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift.

She then starred alongside Don Murray in A Hatful of Rain, a groundbreaking drug-addiction drama that was released sooner in 1957 than Raintree Country, while being made later. For her portrayal, she was nominated for the British Academy of Film and Television’s “Best Foreign Actress” award.

On October 28, 1951, Saint married Jeffrey Hayden, a producer and director. Darrell Hayden and Laurette Hayden were their two children.  Darrell, their first child, was born two days after she won an Oscar for On the Waterfront. Hayden died on December 24, 2016, at the age of 90, after a 65-year marriage.
