Who is Erykah Badu?

Erica Abi Wright, better known by her stage name Erykah Badu, was born on February 26, 1971, in the United States. She is also an actress and record producer. Hip-hop, R&B, and soul are all influences,As a result of her 1997 debut album Baduizm, which put her at the forefront of the neo soul trend and earned her the title “Queen of Neo Soul” from music reviewers, Badu gained notoriety in the late 1990s. In Dallas, Texas, Erica Abi Wright became Erykah Badu. After divorcing their father, William Wright Jr., she raised her, her sister, her brother Eevin, and them all by herself. The grandparents of the children, both maternal and paternal, often assisted in raising them.

At the age of four, Badu had her first taste of the entertainment industry when she performed at the Dallas Theater Center and The Black Academy of Arts and Letters  with the help of her godmother Gwen Hargrove and her uncle Curtis King, who founded TBAAL. Early in 1997, Badu’s first album, Baduizm, was made available. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard charts and number one on the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and it was well received both critically and commercially.

The financial and critical success of Baduizm paved the way for Badu to become one of the top performers in the neo soul genre.  Many people compared her vocal style to that of Billie Holiday.  The Recording Industry Association of America, the British Phonographic Industry, and the Canadian Recording Industry Association all awarded Baduizm gold, platinum, and triple platinum certifications.

The debut single, “On & On,” was released in December 1996[19] and peaked at number 12 on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts, the UK Singles Charts, as well as appearing on the New Zealand charts. The album yielded four singles. In addition, the album’s first hit, “On & On,” earned Badu her first Grammy nomination and victory. The album was named Best R&B Album, while “On & On” was named Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.

While expecting Seven, Badu recorded her first live album, Live, and it was released just before Seven was born. The album was released on November 18, 1997, and it peaked at number one on the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and number four on the US Billboard 200. For sales of more than two million copies, the RIAA awarded the album a two times platinum certification.  “Tyrone,” the album’s debut single, was released in October 1997 and quickly rose to R&B chart success. Lyrically, “Tyrone” makes fun of a stingy, cheap, and uncaring partner.

On the Roots’ ground-breaking 1999 album Things Fall Apart, Badu also worked with them . She appeared on the The Roots and American female rapper Eve song “You Got Me.” The song, which Jill Scott co-wrote, hit number 39 in the US and number 31 in the UK. A Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group was given to The Roots and Badu in 1999 as a result of the song.

By the time she was 14 years old, Badu was freestyling for a local radio station with artists like Roy Hargrove. She had changed her first name from Erica to Erykah when she was young because she felt her previous name was a “slave name.” The word “kah” refers to one’s inner self. In addition to being the name of the 10th-born child among the Akan people of Ghana, she chose the surname “Badu” since it is her favourite jazz scat sound.

Following her graduation from the historically black institution Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Badu enrolled in Grambling State University to study theatre. Before she could graduate in 1993, she quit the institution to devote herself entirely to music. To make ends meet at this period, Badu worked many minimum-wage jobs. At the South Dallas Cultural Center, she instructed young people in dance and theatre.

She recorded the 19-song tape Country Cousins while working and travelling with her cousin Robert “Free” Bradford, and it caught Kedar Massenburg’s ear. He arranged for Badu to record “Your Precious Love,” a duet with D’Angelo, and finally signed her to a record contract with Universal Records.

In 1994, Badu opened a gig for D’Angelo in Fort Worth, which led record label executive Kedar Massenburg to contract her to Kedar Entertainment and launch her career. In February 1997, Baduizm, her first album, was made available.  With “On & On,” “Appletree,” “Next Lifetime,” and “Otherside of the Game,” it gave birth to four singles. The Recording Industry Association of America awarded the record quadruple Platinum certification. Live, her first live album, was released in November 1997 and received a double Platinum certification from the RIAA.

Mama’s Gun, her second studio album, was released in 2000. Three songs were born from it: “Bag Lady,” which reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number six, “Didn’t Cha Know?” and “Cleva.” The RIAA awarded the album a Platinum certification. Worldwide Underground, Badu’s third album, was released in 2003. Three singles came from it: “Love of My Life,” “Danger,” and “Back in the Day.” ‘Love’ became her second song to hit in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, at number nine.

The RIAA awarded the album a Gold certification.  New Amerykah Part One, Badu’s fourth album, was released in 2008. It gave birth to the singles “Honey” and “Soldier”. 2010 saw the publication of New Amerykah Part Two, which did well both critically and economically. It included “Window Seat,” the album’s first hit, which generated controversy.

Billie Holiday, a jazz singer, has been likened to Badu’s voice. Early in her career, Badu gained notoriety for her unusual style, which often included donning enormous, vivid headwraps. She was one of the Soulquarians’ founding members. She has acted in a variety of minor parts in films including House of D, The Cider House Rules, and Blues Brothers 2000. She has furthermore starred in the films The Black Power Mixtape 1967–1975 and Before the Music Dies.
