Ed Ames, often known as Eddie Ames, was an American singer and actor who was born Edmund Dantes Urick on July 9, 1927. His mainstream singles from the mid-to-late 1960s include “My Cup Runneth Over,” “Who Will Answer?” and “When the Snow Is on the Roses.” With his siblings, he was a member of the Ames Brothers, a popular 1950s singing group.
Ames was born in the United States, in Malden, Massachusetts, to Jewish parents Sarah (Zaslavskaya) and David Urick (called Eurich), who had immigrated from Ukraine.He was the youngest of nine children, five boys and four girls, born to his parents.
Ames was born and raised in a low-income family.He studied classical and opera music, as well as literature, at the Boston Latin School.The brothers established a quartet while still in high school and frequently won competitions in and around Boston.
Three of the brothers went on to create the Amory Brothers quartet, which was hired by bandleader Art Mooney in New York City. Abe Burrows, a playwright, advised the brothers to rename their band the Ames Brothers.
Decca Records contracted the Ames Brothers in 1947, but due to a Musician Union prohibition in 1948 (a remnant from the 1942–1944 musicians’ strike), Decca only released three singles by the brothers and one supporting Russ Morgan.
They signed with Decca’s subsidiary Coral Records just as the prohibition was ending. With the double-sided “Rag Mop” and “Sentimental Me,” they achieved their first big hit in the 1950s.
With successes like “It Only Hurts For a Little While,” “You, You, You,” and “The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane,” the brothers joined RCA Victor Records and continued to have success throughout the 1950s.
The brothers had regular appearances on network television variety shows and even had their own 15-minute show in 1955. The Ames Brothers broke up in the early 1960s, and Ed Ames went to the Herbert Berghof School to pursue an acting career.
He made his Broadway debut in an off-Broadway production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, followed by starring roles in The Fantasticks and Carnival! .Ames was a member of Carnival’s national travelling troupe.

Ames guest-starred as Kennedy in the 1963 episode “The Day of the Pawnees, Part 2” on ABC’s The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters, with Kurt Russell in the title role, and played a wanted murderer holed up in a hotel during a smallpox quarantine in a 1962 The Rifleman episode (“Quiet Night, Deadly Night”).
In 1963, he appeared as a guest star on NBC’s Redigo, a modern western series created by Richard Egan. Ames improved his tomahawk throwing skills while playing Mingo on television. On April 27, 1965, he appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, which became one of his most memorable moments of his career.
Ames and Johnny Carson talked about Ames’ tomahawk throwing skills throughout the show. Carson challenged Ames to demonstrate his ability to hit a target from across the room. Ames consented, and a wood panel bearing a chalk outline of a cowboy was placed on the stage.

In 1965, Ames made a comeback as a solo performer. The baritone voice of Ames is well-known. “Try to Remember” became his debut chart song for RCA Victor. The song only just made it into the top 100. The song “My Cup Runneth Over” became a larger hit in 1967.
The song was a pop smash as well as a hit on adult contemporary radio. Soon after, he had less success on the Pop charts, only having Adult Contemporary singles with “Time, Time,” “When the Snow Is on the Roses,” and “Timeless Love,” the latter of which was penned by Buffy Sainte-Marie.
With “Who Will Answer?” in 1968, he made it into the Pop Top Twenty for the final time in his singing career. The Canadian RPM Magazine hot singles list placed “Apologize” at number 47.Because of his version of “Do You Hear What I Hear?” Ames’ unique baritone is a regular radio presence during the Christmas season.
Bing Crosby’s version of the song was the best-selling version in 1962, but Ames’ version, which was recorded a few years later, is still in heavy rotation during the holidays. In the 1967 John Wayne/Batjac Productions film The War Wagon, Ames sang “Ballad of the War Wagon.”
