Who is Doc Severinsen?

Hilding, Carl “Doc” Severinsen (born July 7, 1927) is an American jazz trumpeter who played with Johnny Carson’s band on The Tonight Show. Minnie Mae (1897–1998) and Carl Severinsen (1898–1972) raised Severinsen in Arlington, Oregon.

He was given the moniker Doc after his father, who was born in Germany to a Danish father and a Swiss mother and was the only dentist in Arlington. Severinsen’s father played the violin and encouraged him to take up the instrument, but Severinsen preferred trombone.

He settled for the cornet because his arms were too short for trombone and the small Arlington music store didn’t have any. His father instructed him to spit out the notes like spitting tobacco, while a neighbour assisted him in learning how to play. If he didn’t practise, his mother threatened to spank him.

Severinsen showed an early aptitude for the instrument, playing in a high school band at the age of seven. He won a state trumpet contest at nine years old, joined a multi-state all-star band at thirteen, and auditioned for Tommy Dorsey at fourteen but was not hired.

He formed the Blue Notes, a quartet that performed at neighbourhood dances. He was hired to tour with the Ted Fio Rito Orchestra before graduating from high school.He proceeded on tour with Charlie Barnet, Tommy Dorsey, and Benny Goodman after graduation.

During World War II, he served in the Army.Between 1946 until 1951, Severinsen was a member of Sam Donahue’s band.He played trumpet on radio station KODL in 1946.In 1949, Severinsen secured a job as a studio musician for NBC, where he accompanied Steve Allen, Eddie Fisher, Dinah Shore, and Kate Smith.

Carson travelled with certain members of the band after retiring in 1992, including Conte Candoli, Snooky Young, Bill Perkins, Ernie Watts, Ross Tompkins, and Ed Shaughnessy. Severinsen was a member of high school bands, most notably Don Caneva’s John Hersey High School Bands, with whom he made four albums in the 1970s.

He sang the “Star-Spangled Banner” on at least three national television broadcasts, but the first two were plagued by technical difficulties. The public address system at Tulane Stadium went out for a minute when he was accompanying actor Pat O’Brien as he performed the National Anthem at Super Bowl IV, though fans were unaware of it.
