Who is Clint Eastwood?

The son of Clinton Eastwood Sr, a bond salesman who eventually became a manufacturing executive for Georgia-Pacific, and Ruth Wood, an IBM operator, Clint Eastwood grew up in San Francisco. He grew up in adjacent Piedmont, comfortably middle-class. Clint liked music and mechanics but was otherwise a dull student who lost a grade. His parents and sister moved to Washington state in 1949, and Clint spent two years working menial jobs in the Pacific Northwest. In 1951, he returned to California and enrolled in Los Angeles City College, but dropped out after two semesters to pursue acting.

During the mid-’50s, he worked uncredited minor parts in B-films like Revenge of the Creature and Tarantula while also excavating pools and operating a garbage truck. In 1958, he made his TV debut in Rawhide (1959), co-starring Eric Fleming. Clint was upgraded to series star when Fleming left the show in its last year, becoming a familiar face to television fans across the country. In Sergio Leone’s spaghetti western trilogy A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966), Eastwood played The Man with No Name (1966).

During their copyright years, the films were only screened in Italy, with Enrico Maria Salerno voicing Clint’s character. With his latest film’s success, Eastwood, 37, went from unknown to sought-after in a matter of months. Hang ‘Em High, the late star’s first American western, was also a hit (1968). Then came Coogan’s Bluff (1968), loosely based on the TV series McCloud (1970), and supporting roles opposite Richard Burton in Where Eagles Dare (1968) and Lee Marvin in Paint Your Wagon (1969). (1969).

As in Two Mules for Sister Sara and Kelly’s Heroes, Eastwood combined tough-guy action with oddball humor. 1971 was his busiest film year. He starred in the acclaimed pornographic film Play Misty for Me (1971) as a sleazy Union soldier (1971). In Dirty Harry (1971), he played a tough cop who helped establish the loose-cannon cop genre. Then came the westerns Joe Kidd (1972), High Plains Drifter (1973), and The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), the Dirty Harry sequels Magnum Force (1973) and The Enforcer (1976), the road adventures Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974) and The Gauntlet (1977), and the true-crime film Escape from Alcatraz (1979).

In 1978, he ventured into comedy with Every Which Way but Loose (1978), which became his biggest hit up to that point and still is. Despite The Eiger Sanction (1975), Clint had a successful decade in the 1970s. In 1980, Eastwood released Any Which Way You Can, the sequel to Every Which Way but Loose. “Make my day,” he says in the fourth Dirty Harry film, Sudden Impact (1983). Honkytonk Man (1982) was Clint’s only commercial failure during this period, as he also starred in Bronco Billy, Firefox, Tightrope, City Heat, Pale Rider, and Heartbreak Ridge. The Dead Pool was his final Dirty Harry film in 1988. (1988). Overall, it was a hit, but not as big as the previous films.  He later directed Bird (1988), a Golden Globe-winning biopic of Charlie Parker, and starred in and directed White Hunter Black Heart (1990), an unsatisfactory, unstructured biopic of John Huston (both films had a limited release).

With Unforgiven (1992), Eastwood earned his first Academy Award nomination (Best Actor) and his first Oscar win (Best Director). In the Line of Fire (1993), he played the secret service, and A Perfect World (1993), starring Kevin Costner, he played second billing for the first time since 1970. Clint then starred in The Bridges of Madison County (1995), a romantic drama co-starring Meryl Streep. After a brief recovery, it became clear he was regressing. The sequels were credible, but nothing stood out. True Crime (1999) and Blood Work (2002), as well as Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997), which he directed but didn’t appear in, performed poorly.

In the mid-2000s, Eastwood returned to the A-list with Million Dollar Baby (2004). The enormously successful drama earned four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Clint. He was nominated for Best Actor twice. Gran Torino (2008), starring Eastwood, made about $30 million in its first weekend, making it his highest grosser without inflation. The trouble with the Curve (2012) and Mrs. Eastwood & Company (2012) were both released in 2012. (2012). Clint has a long and remarkable record of credits behind the camera in between acting engagements.

His films include Mystic River (2003), Flags of Our Fathers (2006), Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) (nominated for Best Picture), Changeling (2008) (with Angelina Jolie), Invictus (2009) (again with Freeman), Jersey Boys (2014), American Sniper (2014), Sully (2016) (with Tom Hanks as hero pilot Chesley Sullenbaugh), and American Sniper (2016) (with Tom Hanks as hero pilot Chesley Sullen (2018). He returned to the big screen in 2018’s The Mule, starring as an unexpected drug courier and directed by Richard Jewell (2019). With Cry Macho, Eastwood became the oldest actor to star above the title (2021).

Outside the spotlight, Eastwood’s life has been described as “hysterical” by biographer Patrick McGilligan. However, his personal life was kept hidden for the first three decades of his notoriety, and several of his families were left out of the official story. Even today, the Hollywood mogul won’t reveal his precise child count.

At least eight children have been fathered by at least six different women in an endless stream of liaisons, many of which overlapped. He has only been married twice and has just three children from those marriages. Burney (in northern California), Sun Valley (in Idaho), and Kihei (in Hawaii) are among Eastwood’s properties.
