In 1959, Cook became a protégé of actress and comedian Lucille Ball, who took her to Hollywood to appear in the “Desilu Review.” Ball gave the actress the stage name “Carole” in honour of Ball’s friend Carole Lombard.

“You have the same healthy disregard for everything in general,” Ball reportedly told Cook. Cook appears on The Lucy Show and Here’s Lucy on a regular basis. Ball served as matron of honour during Cook’s 1964 wedding to actor Tom Troupe, with whom she is still married and has no children.

Cook voiced Pearl Gesner in the animated Disney film Home on the Range. She starred in The Incredible Mr. Limpet, Sixteen Candles, Grandview, U.S.A., American Gigolo, Summer Lovers, and Palm Springs Weekend, among other films.

She appeared in episodes of The Lucy Show, Here’s Lucy, Darkroom, Knight Rider, Emergency!, Magnum, P.I., McMillan and Wife, Murder, She Wrote, Dynasty, Charlie’s Angels, Cagney & Lacey, Grey’s Anatomy, and Hart to Hart.

Cook also featured in the original Broadway productions of 42nd Street and Romantic Comedy, and was the second actress (after Carol Channing) to play Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly! In the 1956 off-Broadway production of The Threepenny Opera, she played Mrs. Peacham opposite Lotte Lenya.

Cook has long been a supporter of AIDS groups and is a regular performer at the annual S.T.A.G.E. fundraiser in Los Angeles. Cook and her actor husband, Tom Troupe, were the first husband and wife to receive the Theatre Ovation Award for Lifetime Career Achievement in 2002.

Cook received the Baylor University Distinguished Alumni Award, the Richmond/Ermet AIDS Foundation’s S.T.A.G.E. Producers Award, and the Hero in the Fight Against AIDS Award, as well as eight Drama-Logue and Robby Awards.

On September 9, 2018, a reporter from TMZ approached Cook to seek her opinion about an actor who snatched a Trump 2020 banner from a spectator during a performance of the musical Frozen. “Where is John Wilkes Booth when you need him?” she asked. “So we need to kill President Trump?” someone asked off camera, to which she replied, “Why not?”

Cook’s remark drew a lot of attention and controversy. Carole Cook, an actress, has always had a gift for comic timing, so much so that Lucille Ball took her on as a protégée.
