Who is Brett Hull ?
Brett Andrew Hull (born August 9, 1964) is a former Canadian–American ice hockey player and general manager who is now the executive vice president of the National Hockey League’s St. Louis Blues (NHL). Between 1986 and 2005, he played for the Calgary Flames, St. Louis Blues, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, and Phoenix Coyotes.
His 741 career goals rank fifth all-time in the NHL, and he is one of only five players to score 50 goals in 50 games. He was a member of two Stanley Cup championship teams, the Dallas Stars in 1999 and the Detroit Red Wings in 2002. Hull was voted one of the “100 Greatest NHL Players” of all time in 2017.
Hull was a top scorer at all levels of the game, and was known as one of the best snipers in the game. He scored 52 goals for the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs in 1985–86. He recorded five consecutive NHL seasons of at least 50 goals with the Moncton Golden Flames of the American Hockey League (AHL).
His 86 goals in 1990–91 are the third-highest single-season total in NHL history, behind only Wayne Gretzky and Bobby Orr. Hull was named the league’s most valuable player and received the Hart Memorial Trophy and Lester B. Pearson Award that year.
He was chosen to three first-team all-star teams and appeared in eight NHL All-Star Games. Hull was born in Belleville, Ontario on August 9, 1964. Bobby, his father, was a long-time NHL and World Hockey Association professional hockey player (WHA).
His mother, Joanne (McKay), was a professional figure skater in the United States who taught him how to skate. Bobby Jr., Blake, and Bart are his three older brothers, while Michelle is his younger half-sister. Bart was a member of the Canadian Football League. His uncle Dennis played in the NHL for many years.
Hull was up in Illinois, where his father was a member of the Chicago Blackhawks, and he began playing organised hockey at the age of four.He and his siblings used to skate with the Chicago Black Hawks, where they would see their father play.
Bobby signed with the first Winnipeg Jets in 1972, and the family returned to Canada. He and teammate Richard Kromm represented the Winnipeg South Monarchs minor ice hockey club at the 1977 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament.
Shortly before his parents’ bitter divorce in 1979, Brett went to Vancouver with his mother and two younger siblings. Following the breakup, Hull was not close to his father, but they chatted on occasion. Hull admitted in his autobiography that he was considered as a “pudgy, fun-loving, music-crazed bum” in his youth, so he was not surprised when he failed to draw the interest of a junior squad.
He was first eligible for the NHL Entry Draft in 1982, however he was passed over since he was still playing in a junior league. In the 1982–83 season, he joined the Penticton Knights of the tier-II British Columbia Junior Hockey League (BCJHL), where he scored 48 goals in 50 games.
Teams were sceptical of his commitment to the game and his conditioning, thus he was passed over again for the 1983 Entry Draft. Hull’s 1983–84 season, in which he scored 105 goals in 56 games and set the BCJHL scoring record with 188 points, drew the attention of NHL teams.
He was drafted 117th overall in the sixth round of the 1984 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames. Hull was seen as a “one-dimensional player” when he first arrived in the NHL. He was a natural goal scorer who disliked backchecking and playing defence.
For his scoring prowess in college, he was dubbed “The Incredible Hull” (a reference to Bruce Banner), and in the NHL, he was dubbed “The Golden Brett,” a play on his father’s nickname of “The Golden Jet.” In his early years, Brett was often compared to Bobby, despite the fact that the two had little resemblance on the ice.
Both were known for their shooting ability, particularly the power of their slapshot, which Terry Crisp – who played against Bobby and coached Brett – described as “explosive,” but while Bobby was a left wing known for both his conditioning and skating ability, Brett was a right wing who lacked his father’s physique.
Throughout his career, he was known for his defensive indifference. Hull’s plus-minus (the difference between the net difference of even strength and shorthanded goals scored for and against while he was on the ice) in his 72-goal season in 1989–90 was 1. Despite 54 goals, he was a 27 four years later.
Hull was also known as a loser due of his Blues’ lack of playoff success. After leading his teams to championships in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey and the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals, he was able to shed that image. Hull had to fit in with the Dallas Stars’ defense-first philosophy in order to win the Stanley Cup in 1999.
That season, he had a career-high plus-minus of +19. Hull and his second wife, Darcie, now reside in Nashville. His first wife, Alison, gave him three children: Jude, Jayde, and Crosby. Jude was also a goalie in hockey. He was a member of the St. Olaf College football team until 2018, but he never played professionally.
Jayde is a student at Colgate University.Hull was twice active in the restaurant business. During his time with the Blues, he owned two restaurants in St. Louis, and after his playing career, he collaborated with Mike Modano and others to open “Hully and Mo Restaurant and Tap Room” in Dallas.
He was the inspiration for Brett Hull Hockey, a Super Nintendo Entertainment System video game released in 1995. Hull was a co-owner of the St. Louis Bandits, a North American Hockey League junior team. Hull returned to the restaurant business in the St. Louis area in November 2020 with the debut of Brett Hull’s Junction in Wentzville, Missouri.
Hull is an enthusiastic golfer who has stated numerous times throughout his career that he prefers golf to hockey. He is a regular at the American Century Celebrity Golf Classic, where his best finish is a tie for fifth place in 2008.He competes in a number of charity and celebrity tournaments, and Golf Digest named him the sixth best athlete golfer in North America in 2009.
