Who is Philip Pullman?

Philip Pullman, OBE, is a British author born on October 19, 1946. His Dark Materials, a series of fantasy novels, is one of his most popular works. Alfred Outram, a Royal Air Force pilot, and Audrey Evelyn Outram, née Merrifield, were the parents of British author Philip Pullman. As a result of his father’s business, the family was often on the move, including to Zimbabwe, where he attended school for a period.

When Pullman was seven years old, his father perished in an aircraft accident. Upon moving to Australia, his mother remarried, and Pullman was introduced to the medium of comic books, especially Superman and Batman, which he continues to support today. He attended Ysgol Ardudwy school in Harlech, Gwynedd, beginning in 1957, and spent time with his preacher grandfather in Norfolk. While researching His Dark Materials at the same time, Pullman came across John Milton’s Paradise Lost.

A third-class BA from Exeter College in 1968 was Pullman’s academic achievement. “I believed I was doing very well until I came out with my third class degree and then I realized that I wasn’t,” he said in an interview with the Oxford Student. “It was the year they stopped issuing fourth class degrees else I would have received one.” Around 1970, he came to the images of William Blake, which had a profound impact on his work.

In 1970, Pullman tied the knot with Judith Speller and started a new chapter in his life as a teacher and playwright. New English Library’s Young Writers Award in 1972 awarded The Haunted Storm as his first published work. Despite this, he refuses to talk about it. His first children’s book, Count Karlstein, was published in 1982 after he wrote Galatea, an adult fantasy novel, in 1978. After the publication of his second children’s book, The Ruby in the Smoke (1986), which has a Victorian setting indicative of Pullman’s interest in that era, he stopped teaching.

Between 1988 and 1996, Pullman taught part-time at Westminster College, Oxford, while continuing to create children’s books. In 1993, he started writing The Dark Materials. One of the most famous British children’s literature prizes, the Carnegie Medal (formerly known as the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award), was awarded to Northern Lights in 1996.

Since 1996, Pullman has been writing full-time, although he still gives lectures and contributes to The Guardian. In 2004, as part of the New Year’s Honours list, he was given the honorary title of CBE. Co-judged the Oxford University Christopher Tower Poetry Prize with Gillian Clarke in 2005. After graduating from Exeter College in 2004, Pullman started teaching a class on English at his alma mater. The Book of Dust, a sequel to his finished His Dark Materials trilogy, is presently being written by him.

On November 23, 2007, Bangor University named Pullman an honorary professor. Signing a book of The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass are the three books that make up His Dark Materials. “Northern Lights,” the first book in the trilogy, was awarded the Carnegie Medal for children’s literature in the United Kingdom in 1995. For the first time, the Whitbread Book of the Year award went to a children’s book in January 2002 for The Amber Spyglass, the last volume in the series.

Popular appreciation for the series came in late 2003 when it finished third in the BBC’s Big Read poll. Lyra’s Oxford, a companion novel to the trilogy, was written by Pullman, and he plans to write two more. Once Upon a Time in the North and The Book of Dust are both expected to be released in 2009. Pullman shared the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for Children’s Literature with another author in 2005.

Pullman is a member of both the British Humanist Association and the National Secular Society as well as an Honorary Associate of both organizations. Pullman has been hailed by New Yorker writer Laura Miller as one of the most vocal atheists in England.

Some Christian organizations have a problem with the His Dark Materials volumes. Pullman’s anti-Christian stance has been criticized by Peter Hitchens. According to him, Pullman once stated: “I’m aiming to undercut the foundation of the Christian religion” in an interview. Additionally, Pullman was interviewed in the same context “acknowledged that a dispute is likely to increase sales.

That being said, I’m not a person who enjoys insulting others. The novels that I’m reading seem to support a number of principles that I hold dear. As a result, every moment of this existence is priceless. In addition, he said that the world is a lovely place and that we should all do our best to spread knowledge throughout the globe”

C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, Hitchens believes, is a direct challenge to His Dark Materials. In spite of Pullman’s criticism of the Narnia books, there are many similarities between the two series. There are parallel realms, talking animals, and religious allegories in each. They both deal with the destiny of these worlds. Both the first Narnia novel, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and the first His Dark Materials book, Northern Lights/The Golden Compass, begin with a little girl hiding in a wardrobe.

Alan Jacobs, a Wheaton College literary critic, claims that Pullman’s recasting of John Milton’s trilogy substitutes a theist worldview with a Rousseauist one. Other Christians, including Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, have backed Pullman, though. They argue that Pullman’s depiction of the “Church” in His Dark Materials is an indictment of dogmatism and the use of religion to oppress rather than an attack on Christianity itself, as some have claimed. As far as Dr. Williams is concerned, His Dark Materials should be taught in schools as part of religious instruction. Authors who have written about Pullman’s treatment of religious topics in his writings have praised him as a kind and courteous debate partner.
